"Floated the Huron river with Dustin for two days. It was furious both days. We caught loads of smallmouth, and nearly twice as many panfish of various types.
I used a 5 wt rod, which I built myself, both days, and I'm glad I did. You needed some backbone to land some of those big, hard-fighting, Smallmouth Bass. It was a great float! We were catching fish pretty much all-day long each day. Drifting a fly around any structure would get you a fish. Any log, rock, or hole in the grass would hold fish.
Dustin has developed his own unique flies specifically for the Huron River. They are extremely effective and entice fish of all species, consistently. He has the knowledge, skill, and experience to put you in a position to catch fish.
Dustin has a sweet drift raft. It is very comfortable and very stable. Floating the river was extremely smooth and it is a great platform for putting a fly in a small target. Some of the areas were overhung with trees and limbs. We could hit every single spot. That is testimony to Dustin's ability in managing the drift and he is a skilled oarsman.
The Huron river is a mix of deep pools with structure, shallow runs scattered with rocks, rock ledges, and large trees, limbs, and logs line the banks. It's a good test of your casting ability to place that fly into a target and getting your drift right, because you know those areas hold giant smallmouth.
